NEWS / For the first time in 30 years, fishing for goliath grouper will be allowed in Florida / Sun Sentinal

The first legal killing of goliath grouper in Florida in more than 30 years was approved Wednesday, over the objections of divers who photograph the huge fish among wrecks off the South Florida coast. Capable of reaching 600 pounds or more, goliath grouper congregate around ships such as the M/V Castor, a former Dutch freighter seized for cocaine smuggling and sunk off Boynton Beach as an artificial reef. Unafraid of their human admirers, well-known goliaths have been given names such as Wilbur (who has his own Facebook page), Shadow and Betty.

FORT LAUDERDALE — The city known for its notorious gridlock may be tunneling its way to the beach one day in the near future. After months of talks, Fort Lauderdale is now one step closer to hiring Elon Musk’s Boring Co. to build twin tunnels to the beach to help cut down on all that maddening traffic. Commissioners approved a plan Tuesday night to begin negotiating with the company and vetting the project.
