PROFILE / Fort Lauderdale’s hidden gem, North Beach Village

Located a block from the ocean and the luxe hotels on A1A, North Beach Village is a forgotten Fort Lauderdale, a strolling, biking and relaxing neighborhood, dotted by a unique repository of the city’s signature, “Mad Men”-era mid-century modern architecture. Its centerpiece is architect Charles McKirahan’s iconic, neon-splashed Birch Tower.

A multilevel entertainment complex with a focus on dining is coming to downtown Miami — and some of Miami's top names have signed up to participate.


This week, Miami-based real estate crowdfunding startup School of Whales unveiled plans to launch its platform with a restoration project aimed at revitalizing the historic Walgreens building at 200 East Flagler St.

The complex, which is slated to open early next year, will be called Julia & Henry’s, a nod to Miami pioneers Julia Tuttle and Henry Flagler.

Host Arlene Borenstein goes inside the kitchen with El Salvadorian chef and co-owner Cristina Ardon. She and co-owner Rudi Lopez, a Mexican-born chef, have been making pupusas and tortillas from scratch at their restaurant for more than a decade.
