Fat Tap Beer Bar and Eatery in Oakland Park abruptly shuts down after six months

A scant six months after opening on Oakland Park’s downtown Dixie Highway drag, Fat Tap Beer Bar and Eatery has poured its final pint. The neighborhood gastropub and brewery, which debuted in late June, has permanently shut down, unable to draw a strong beer-drinking audience as COVID continues raging across the state, owners Robert and Yvette Robayna posted this week on Fat Tap’s social media.

‘We just can’t catch a break’: A perfect storm at South Florida restaurants as omicron surges


A stampede of hungry holiday diners, a raging omicron variant and fewer staff to contain the tide. A perfect storm is mounting at South Florida restaurants at the most critical time on the calendar. For Angelo Abbenante, owner of Lynora’s Italian restaurant in Boca Raton, Christmas weekend brought a recipe for holiday chaos. Only four servers showed up to work the booked-solid dining room. A party of 18 canceled last-minute at his Jupiter location. 

Calypso Restaurant, a longtime Caribbean haven in Pompano Beach, sold to new owners

The longtime owners of Calypso Restaurant, the Caribbean haven for fresh Bahamian conch, peppery jerk wings, peel-and-eat shrimp and cutters, have sold their business after 32 years. Chuck and Lora Ternosky tell the Sun Sentinel that they’ve sold the neighborhood cafĂ© and raw bar at 460 S. Cypress Road to the owners of South Florida-based Mad Hospitality Group. Ternosky says Mad’s two owners, Matt and Dominick, officially took over the restaurant Monday, but he declined to provide last names.
