“[Restaurants] are suffering from labor issues, so this is a way to solve that dilemma,” Siegmann says. “It’s a huge gamble right now to invest a million dollars in a full-service restaurant. Or you could spend $15,000 on a vending machine, get it branded and install it, and if doesn’t work, just unplug it and put it somewhere else.”

The machines are also heavier and stuffed with gadgetry that prevents customers from bear-hugging and rocking the machines in frustration. Yes, food still gets stuck, but “much less often” than break-room snack machines of yesteryear, Siegmann adds.

MIAMI – After months of waiting, Brightline has officially announced it will relaunch its service beginning on Nov. 8 between its Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach stations. PROFILE HISPANIC / Migration changes Broward, new ideas & fresh flavors

The enticing aromas of a bakery that specializes in Cuban treats did more than make Michael Garcia’s mouth water. It was the moment he realized that major changes were happening in Broward, with so many Hispanic families moving north. “That confirms it,” Garcia remembers thinking in 2006 when Broward’s first Vicky Bakery opened in Cooper City. 

And the county is now making plans to reflect the tidal shift in its diversity, with Black and Hispanic people combined outnumbering the white population. About 33.1% of Broward’s population is white, just over 30.2% is Black, and about 31.3% is Hispanic, according to the latest county data. So the county is moving ahead with its intention to carve out another designated Black voting district and — for the first time — a Hispanic seat. The plans have been welcomed by both communities.

(CNN) — Teachers are going to get a little extra lovin’ this week with free breakfast “Thank You” meals from McDonald’s as a token of appreciation. Any educator, including teachers, administrators, and school staff can go to McDonald’s from October 11 to October 15 to receive their breakfast meal, McDonald’s said in a news release Friday. 

 “Together with our Owner/Operators, we’re proud to serve the people who make our communities a better place, and this is an important time to say thank you to some of our everyday heroes,” McDonald’s USA President Joe Erlinger said in the release. “We were honored to give away 12 million free Thank You Meals to first responders and healthcare workers last year and now, with educators going above and beyond, we’re excited to recognize them in a way only McDonald’s can.”

NEWS / Grocery store shelves aren’t going back to normal this year

(CNN) — If you hoped grocery stores this fall and winter would look like they did in the Before Times, with limitless options stretching out before you in the snack, drink, candy and frozen foods aisles, get ready for some disappointing news. 

 Many of the country’s biggest food makers are telling grocers that they will have limited quantities of a number of their products, including things like Rice Krispies Treats, Sour Patch Kids, some Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavors, McCormick gourmet spices, and Marie Callender’s pot pies because of labor, commodity and transportation constraints throttling supply chains, according to emails viewed by CNN and interviews with grocers. Some suppliers are also telling grocers to cancel their promotions of these items and more over the holidays so these items won’t disappear from store shelves as quickly.

Anthony’s Runway 84, the longstanding, old-school Italian restaurant that restaurateur Anthony Bruno opened with his father in 1982, will shut down in 2022 for a first-class upgrade.

The occasion for this multimillion-dollar makeover is the restaurant’s fast-approaching 40th anniversary next year. Bruno tells the South Florida Sun Sentinel that his State Road 84 staple will likely close in January and reopen in May with a sleeker, 21st-century dining room that will retain many of its airplane motifs.

The first legal killing of goliath grouper in Florida in more than 30 years was approved Wednesday, over the objections of divers who photograph the huge fish among wrecks off the South Florida coast. Capable of reaching 600 pounds or more, goliath grouper congregate around ships such as the M/V Castor, a former Dutch freighter seized for cocaine smuggling and sunk off Boynton Beach as an artificial reef. Unafraid of their human admirers, well-known goliaths have been given names such as Wilbur (who has his own Facebook page), Shadow and Betty.

NEWS / Elon Musk’s traffic tunnels to the beach now on the horizon for Fort Lauderdale / Sun Sentinal

FORT LAUDERDALE — The city known for its notorious gridlock may be tunneling its way to the beach one day in the near future. After months of talks, Fort Lauderdale is now one step closer to hiring Elon Musk’s Boring Co. to build twin tunnels to the beach to help cut down on all that maddening traffic. Commissioners approved a plan Tuesday night to begin negotiating with the company and vetting the project. 

The current plan is to build two one-way tunnels along with a station at the city’s beachfront park at A1A and Las Olas, and another at the Brightline station downtown.
